THE ROLE OF COMMUNITY COLLEGES IN MEETING STUDENTS' BASIC NEEDS

Throughout higher education, there is increasing concern about students who experience food insecurity, housing insecurity, and difficulty meeting other critical needs. Given how this can impact student enrollments, it only makes sense for colleges, in partnership with their communities, to more actively help students meet their basic needs. CCCSE and the National Alliance for Community & Technical College (NACTC) hosted a webinar with Cuyahoga Community College (OH), Edmonds College (WA), and Northwest Vista College (TX) to discuss how these colleges are addressing students’ basic needs. Presenters included Angela Johnson (VP Enrollment Management, Cuyahoga Community College, OH), Jorge de la Torre (Associate VP for Student Success and Engagement, Edmonds College, WA), Lisa Black (Director of Student Advocacy, Northwest Vista College, TX), Lauren Simer (NACTC Board Chair & VP for Institutional Effectiveness, Greenville Technical College, SC), and Linda García (Executive Director, CCCSE).

THE VALUE PROPOSITION OF CAREER AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION (CTE) FOR GREENVILLE TECHNICAL COLLEGE (GTC), GREENVILLE, SC

Download Presentation (PDF)

Higher Education faces complex pressures from students, parents, business, and legislative leaders to prove that college is “worth it.” Given declining enrollments, it is critical that community colleges clearly demonstrate the value of postsecondary CTE to the public. GTC conducted a study to understand the CTE student labor market outcomes and identify gaps in instructional knowledge. Ms. Varga presented the findings that show a measurable return to students one year following completion of CTE credentials. She discussed comparative value and demand results at the credential and program of study levels and explored the limitations of existing data and examined steps for improving knowledge of graduate labor market outcomes.

Capturing Change

The past year has served as a stark reminder that organizational leaders will face change and must adapt to it. However, the need to lead effectively in a time of change is not limited to major crises like a global pandemic. It is a constant for all leaders. This webinar featured Capturing Change: A facilitated conversation with Dr. Alex Johnson (President, Cuyahoga Community College) and Dr. Michael McCall (President Emeritus, Kentucky Community & Technical College System) around creating systems of continuous improvement.

COVID-19 Effects on Black Male Students

The 2020-2021 Pandemic disproportionately affected society’s most vulnerable: low income, under-represented, and marginalized. Panelists shared outcomes of African American students’ experience during the pandemic with a specific focus on the impact of the sudden disruption to and cessation of face-to-face course instruction on black male students. The conversation expanded into solutions and, specifically, the role that community colleges can play in leading the way forward.

Online Teaching/Learning: Lessons Learned and the Road Forward

Carolyn Dube, Instructional Architect, and Mindy Waltz, Instructional Designer from our NACTC member institution Capella University, addressed the challenges that community college leaders face in online programming and course delivery as they reflected on the lessons learned in the previous 18 months. The unexpected thrust into the online delivery modality due to the pandemic has left many with questions about ways to improve course design, course delivery, instructional assessment, faculty training, and other challenges that were addressed in this presentation.
