Building Bridges: Higher Education Responding to Industry, Government, and Student Needs

Summer Conference 2023 sessions and discussions highlighted the importance of higher education institutions in adapting to the changing needs of the business, industry, and political climate while remaining committed to serving students.

Sessions included topics such as:

• Partnering with local businesses and government agencies to develop educational programs that meet workforce needs

• Addressing the changing political climate and its impact on higher education

• Exploring new models of education that prioritize student needs and learning outcomes

• Discussing perceptions of higher education and ways to communicate its value to students and the community

WKCTC showcased the unique attributes of Paducah, KY, including its cultural diversity, historical significance, and economic opportunities.

Keynote Speaker, Dr. Rick Smith, vice president of external affairs and economic partnerships, Kentucky Higher Education Authority Council on Post-Secondary Education, spoke on the changing needs in workforce education.

TENNESSEE TRIFECTA: Education, business, and economic development

In recent years, the importance of technical training and associate degrees has gained increased national attention as a successful economy depends on a well-educated, highly skilled workforce. Education and workforce preparedness are essential to foster economic development, and 2019’s conference theme, Tennessee Trifecta: Education, Business and Economic Development, focused on how these three areas are inextricably linked in creating effective partnerships to successfully prepare students to compete in a global economy.

​Deliberative Dialogues

Deliberative dialogue is a form of discussion aimed at finding the best course of action. Deliberative questions take the form "What should we do?" The purpose is not so much to solve a problem or resolve an issue as to explore the most promising avenues for action. Following a usage that traces back to the ancient Greeks, deliberation can be defined as the process of establishing intent and resolve, where a person or group explores different solutions before settling on a specific course of action. "We deliberate not about ends," said Aristotle, "but about the means to attain ends." Deliberation is necessary for what is uncertain, he noted, when there may be reasons for deciding on one course of action but equally compelling reasons for deciding on another.

​Leading in Turbulent Times: Addressing Emerging Issues

The 2017 Summer Conference’s theme and presentations provide an opportunity for exciting yet deliberate conversations about leading in turbulent times while addressing emerging issues. In higher education, accountability, productivity and state funding are in jeopardy. Student enrollments are trending flat and/or downward, coupled with unfunded mandates and an increase in performance-based funding models implemented nationwide. The intellectual and logistical challenges may be daunting, and the emotional confusion and chaos created during such change is not optional. Fundamental change is painful, but the rulebook for leading in the midst of unpredictable change remains constant.

Summer 2016 Conference Sharing Sessions

​Early Transfer Identification Program (E-TIP)

The Early Transfer Identification Program (E-TIP) is an agreement between the University of Texas at Arlington and Tarrant County College to provide an early transfer identification program and related services to transfer students. Once each semester, TCCD provides an electronic file to UT Arlington of designated  date elements  from which they create an application record. An admissions representative is on the campuses to meet and advise students regarding course work and transferability. If the TCCD student attends classes at UTA before finishing their degree, UT Arlington reverse articulates that information back to TCCD to ensure completion of the Associates Degree. At the point the E-TIP application is created, UTA’s tuition rate is constant for a period of 48 months from the time the application is created.

Winter 2014 Conference Program

Bringing the World to the Classroom and the Classroom to the World

LSC-University Park President Shah Ardalan served as both host and presenter as he outlined LSC-University Park’s Invitation-to-Innovate (i2i) initiative that invites faculty, staff and the community to help build the innovative college of the 21st century. “LSC-UP is a perfect example of how community colleges have redefined the “community” as the world and redesigned the “college” to serve our local and global communities.”
